Tonsil boulders!

August 31st, 2006 by WyldCherry

BLARRRRGGGG

Sometimes I wish I had my tonsils removed when I was a kid. These evil lumps of worthless flesh have been causing me grief ever since childhood. Mostly my right tonsil, which has been aching on and off. This usually happens when I eat a lot of sweets. The little bacteria in the back of my throat party and create these huge tonsil boulders (well it’s called tonsil stones or tonsilloliths) within the crevices of my tonsils.

Which looks like this:

tonsilloliths

Pretty, huh?

So, whenever I see these tonsil boulders (and not willing to go through a tonsillectomy…yes I’m chicken shit), I grab my trusty mirror and a toothpick and scrape it out. Today, I scrapped out one that was the size of a small pea. After that and some salt water gargling (bleh), my tonsil started to feel better. Hmm, maybe I should save these things. I could probably produce the worlds largest tonsil stone…hmm… Do they have a record for the largest tonsillotlith? If not, then Guinessess, sign me up!

I get a new one every week or so and I have learned to get rid of them pretty easily. I dip the end of a q-tip in mouth wash and sweep it out i guess u could say, but I do it so that it doesn’t fall back in my throat, I make it stick to the q-tip then its out. After that I usually gargle. They are annoying, but I have learned an easy way to get them out.

I don’t know if there’s any official record for the largest tonsillolith, but if one existed I think the one at this site would probably take the cake: http://scielo.isciii.es/scielo.php?pid=S1698-44472005000300008&script=sci_arttext

Imagine hacking that little dude up out of your throat one morning.

my reccomendation would be to get your tonsils out. No need to be scared i ma in my foutrh day of recovery and doing ok. I would rather go through a liitle pain now that the pain for life. to inlclude that bad breath. The Surgeon, told me they were approx 2-3/4″ thick and rotten all the way to the base. You will also not get as sick either. Do it

I have had tonsil stones all my life and getting my tonsils removed was one of the best decisions I ever made. Not having the worry of the stones is such a relief. My breath is better and Im not spending countless hours with a flashlight and a poky object down my throat. My surgery was pretty smooth. I had post operative hemoraging in my throat because I was throwing up so much after my surgery and I had to go in for a second surgery. They say that about 10% of adult have post op hemoraging. All in all the 2 weeks I spent being misrable was well worth it.

I just found out that i have these nasty things and i cant stand them! I am constantly picking around for them, it’s like a nervous habit. I am in school for dental hygiene and i am going to be so embarassed if my student partner sees or smells these nasty thing in my mouth! I want my tonsils out right now while i’m stillunder my dad’s insurance. Do you have to have the strep throat to have the tonsilectomy though?
